meeting at the edges
Gary Anderson | Sam Elkins | Diane Sandlin
May 8 – June 8
Opening reception: May 10, 4-7
Artist Talk: Third Thursday, May 15, 5-8
As our days pass, we experience changes to our mental, physical, and emotional selves. Our personal lives are a passing of seasons rich with experiences that shape us physically and emotionally. In the artwork of Gary Anderson, Sam Elkins, and Diane Sandlin, these influential experiences are explored in a shared dialog between mixed media, textiles, and painting. Viewers are invited to consider a trinity of combined textures, colors, and materials that challenge established edges and boundaries of personal ownership, control, and permanence.
Gary Anderson is a mixed media and fiber artist currently residing in Georgetown, Texas. Anderson received his bachelor’s degree in art education from Southwest Texas State University in 1974 and his M.F.A. degree from the University of Texas in 1984. He has exhibited his work at numerous art festivals, galleries, and venues, earning representation from galleries in Austin and across Central Texas. His work has also received awards in juried regional exhibitions. Anderson currently serves as Exhibits Coordinator at Georgetown Art Center, where he served on the board of directors from 2011-2014 and worked as GAC Coordinator from 2018-2023.
“Sam” (an early childhood nickname) Elkins is a contemporary fiber artist and weaver. A native of northern New Mexico her art reflects a devotion for natural fibers, a deep respect for both traditional and contemporary fiber arts and memories of the sheep ranch where she spent her childhood in the shadows of the Sangre’ de’ Cristo mountains. Elkins’ work has been shown in galleries from Santa Fe to Boston. She has participated in curated exhibits throughout the country and today continues her studio work in the small community of Wimberley near Austin, Texas. (But each Fall she packs a small loom and heads to northern New Mexico to just to revive her vision.)
Diane Sandlin’s worldview and appreciation of the finer arts was honed during a few years living in Germany which was followed by UT-Austin. Most creative pursuits were then parlayed into a corporate risk management career based in Dallas and San Francisco. Her next chapter became art-focused, creating art quilts and wall hangings, followed by a mastery program in art cloth. This textile immersion eventually catapulted her into painting where she found a greater ability for expression. She has steadily created paintings which have been shown widely - both solo and group - and her work is in collections throughout the U.S. When not creating from her Georgetown studio, Diane can be found volunteering in the community, particularly in the arts.
