Artist Talk: Sunday, March 8, 2pm
A solo exhibiiton celebrating Austin’s community pools with recent acrylic and oil paintings by Ruth Lauer.
Ruth Lauer’s vibrant paintings capture the playfulness and shared rituals of summers spent at Austin’s community swimming pools. Her work evokes shimmering, sunlit moments that feel suspended in time. With a keen eye for color and composition, she depicts the shifting hues of water and the joyful chaos of public spaces.
Lauer strives to celebrate community and poke fun at her own and humanity’s foibles. In the artist’s words, "I create portraits of people, food or animals, but also of private moments in public settings. I try to portray the emotion that a memory holds, and the calm of commonplace beauty. And sometimes I just want to push color around. I would like the paintings to evoke a personal memory or emotion for viewers.”
Lauer studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and Design, and lived for 10 years in Europe before moving to Austin, Texas in 1991.
